This document aims to summarize the current development of the Icarus project in order to further discuss the challenges and objectives of Icaurs in order to define a realistic timeline of the project.
¶ Discussion Summary and Action Plan
- Location: Likely Quarry, covered by insurance.
- Tethered Flight: Initially at Quarry, location specifics to be determined later.
- Free Flight: Planned for the future, but specific location not yet determined.
- Development Focus: Ensure the vehicle design is not overly optimized for tethered flights to maintain relevance for free flight.
- Team Composition:
- Remaining members : 5 members, including 2 interested SEs, 1 interested TL, and 2 remaining members.
- Structure/Drone:
Tasks:
- Develop a system for moving the hopper easily.
- Design and construct legs (details not clear).
- Recruitment should be minimal but effective.
- Consider vehicle maintenance as part of the plan.
- Recruitment constraints are not significant.
- Avionics: Owen is knowledgeable and needs additional team members.
- GNC: Requires fewer but highly skilled members. Training resources for GNC are available.More to be prepared during the summer.
- Ground Systems (GS):
- Two interested in TL for GS next year.
- Mechanical aspects need attention for the next year (launch rail).
- Develop a GS compatible with Icarus and GSC competition.
- Address timeline conflicts between Icarus and competition.
- (GSE): Under Hyperion project.
- Responsibility: Assigned to management.
- Head of Logistics: VP Executive or HM.
- Task Nature: Passive task with no certainty yet.
- Strategy: Mimic GSP strategies for site management.
Lander Challenge
Objectives not in Reach
TVC Hotfire: Already completed.
Throttleable Hotfire: Nearly completed.
Why go to Lander Challenge ?: Need to establish contacts. So it's better to apply anyway and see where it gets us
- Create Training Tools: Develop mini-stages for training GNC members.
- Readiness by Week 6: Ensure new recruits are well-prepared.
- Throttleable Hotfire: October 2024.
- Characterize and test the gimbal.
- Finish producing and characterizing A3.
- Complete TF.
- TVC Hotfire: December 2024.
- Drone Timeline:
- End of September 2024.
- Integration of GNC and avionics by December 24, 2024.
- Summer work dependency (Unknown).
- Reza's continued involvement (Unknown).
- Start of September: Review objectives.
- Test Readiness Review: Begin next semester. Determine testing requirements and methods. Icarus to follow a test timeline rather then a design timeline
- VSFT: April vacation.
- Tethered Flight: Before Summer vacation.
- Active Control on Rockets: Implement advanced control systems.
- Hopper with regenerative cooling bi-liquid motor: Explore regenerative cooling bi-liquid motor implementation for the hopper.
¶ Main Goal
- Achieve a successful hop with the hopper.
- Try not to perturbate the Icarus timeline
- Probably impossible at the quarry (at least with current situation).
- Tethered flight might be possible in a near(ish) future
- No known possibility for free flight in Switzerland at present time
- Crane
- Vehicle attached to launchpad
- 2 interested SEs
- 1 interested TL
- 2 remaning members
(Source : messages, might be innacurate)
- Free flight wouldn't be covered
- Tethered flight is in the (dark) gray zone
- Attached tests should be fine
¶ Lander Challenge
- TVC Hotfire (15k): 2.2 kN thrust vectoring for 10 seconds (already won by 3 teams: SLO , SEB, ICL )
- Throttleable Hotfire (15k): Thrust control sequence (won by 1 team SLO)
- Bess Touchdown Award (25k): Landing from 10 meters with payload using a tether.
- Tethered Hover (25k) : Controlled hover for 10 seconds with payload.
- Hop (50k) : 50 meters altitude, land in a 10-meter diameter circle, with kill switch.
